The Unofficial Shepherds’ Conference Guide To Lent

And he [Jesus] said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! Mark 7:9 In my conversation with him, I used the word “papist.”  He nodded and tossed out the altogether appropriate synonym of “Romish.” Despite the obvious associations of Lent with the apostate … Read more

The Gospel Coalition Says the Oscars Matter [insert eyeroll]

Did you know that the Oscars should matter to Christians? So says Samuel James and the cultural commentators over at The Gospel Coalition. Now, you may not realize it because you’re not savvy enough at impacting the culture for the sake of human flourishing (or however they talk over at the Intelligentsia water cooler), but … Read more

On The Gospel Coalition’s “Wretched Infatuation” With Culture

Phil Johnson posted perhaps the most appropriate response to it.  His one-word reaction evokes a sort of slack-jawed, eye-rolling, bang head on desk, “Father forgive them” chiding. (Phil Johnson is the Executive Director of Grace To You.  According to the GTY.org website, “He has been closely associated with John MacArthur since 1981 and edits most … Read more

The Gospel Coalition Moving Towards Affirming LGBTQXYZ

Update. 04.28.20 The sweet resurfaced recently, and Matt has recanted his former beliefs and statement. So that is excellent. The Gospel Coalition, as it’s referred to, has been a patchwork of loose and ambiguous theology, and a melting pot for some really unconventional thinking in evangelicalism. So when I saw the following tweet, I really … Read more

Charismatic Gullibility, Dr. Michael Brown and Discernment

I am an unashamed Pentecostal/charismatic believer, a lifelong tongues speaker (since Jan. 24, 1972), one of the four principle leaders who served in the Brownsville Revival, the author of an in-depth, scholarly treatment of divine healing, the man who wrote Authentic Fire in response to Pastor John MacArthur’s Strange Fire… Yet I am terribly ashamed … Read more

Should a Complementarian Speak with Lady Preachers?

Todd Pruitt, at the 1517 blog (which is affiliated with the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals), begins a post on the topic of Piper speaking with Christine Caine at Passion ’16 with the following… Is it consistent with the complementarianism of CBMW, TGC, and Danvers to share preaching duties with a woman preacher? Was it wise for … Read more

War Room: A Review by Justin Peters

If you do not know the Kendrick brothers by name, you almost certainly know them by their films: Flywheel (2003),Facing the Giants (2006), Fireproof (2008), and Courageous (2011). Stephen, Alex, and Shannon Kendrick have just released their fifth faith-based film, War Room. War Room, starring popular Bible teachers Priscilla Shirer and Beth Moore, looks like it may well be the most successful of their films to date bringing in $11 million just on its opening weekend; more than triple it’s $3 million production budget.

Given the popularity of Christian themed films and the considerable buzz about this one in particular, my wife, Kathy, and I went to see War Room on the evening of September 3rd so that I could write a review. For those of you who read my review of Mark Burnett and Roma Downey’s movie, Son of God, you know that I am a bit skeptical of the Christian movie genre as a whole. Nonetheless, I do want to offer what I hope to be a fair review. This review will not touch on every single facet of the movie or even on every theme it presents, but I do hope to address what I believe to be the most important of them.

1 Corinthians, The Coalition, Worldly Wisdom, and Fire

In addition to Jordan’s excellent treatment of The Gospel Coalition’s bizarre and probably sinful decision to invite lost people to comment on justice and mercy, I’d like to pile on with some thoughts of my own. Though I am tempted to include a rant about the futility of conference upon conference upon conference upon conference … Read more

The “Gospel” Coalition to Include Non-Christians in Panel

In a post today, the Gospel Coalition laid out a defense for their inviting of TGC15 panelists who do not believe, well…the Gospel. Following the trend set by evangelical heavy-hitters including the SBC’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission and others, The Gospel Coalition is capitalizing on the controversy in Ferguson, Missouri to focus on social justice … Read more

Marketing 316: “Heroes” and Insidious Instigation

“A worthless person, a wicked man, Is the one who walks with a perverse mouth, Who winks with his eyes, who signals with his feet, Who points with his fingers; Who with perversity in his heart continually devises evil, Who spreads strife. Therefore his calamity will come suddenly; Instantly he will be broken and there … Read more
