A Rejoinder to Christianity Astray’s Defense of Rick Warren

Recently, I wrote an article addressing serious theological issues that the CEO of Saddleback Church, Rick Warren, preached at the Hillsong 2015 Conference. Apparently this article ruffled quite a few feathers, since it has almost five-thousand Facebook shares, and Hillsong even contacted me requesting that I remove the video of Rick Warren’s sermon from Youtube … Read more

Christianity Today says Rick Warren's Mysticism isn't Heresy Because he affirms the Nicene Creed

SBC Speaker Affirms Prophetess Cindy Jacob’s “Prophetic Ministry”

If you don’t know who Cindy Jacobs is, you don’t listen to Fighting for the Faith. Weekly, sometimes daily, Chris Rosebrough plays clip after clip of the bizarre, outlandish prophesies of this woman, each one more astoundingly insane and (provenly) wrong than the next. For anyone in orthodox Christianity, Cindy Jacobs – like William Tapley … Read more

Why Some People Need a Good Killing…A Biblical Defense for Self Defense

Just because we’re good people doesn’t mean we won’t kill you – Rick Grimes Right. So, maybe a Biblical defense for self-defense shouldn’t begin with quotation from the protagonist in a televised Zombie apocalypse set in the dystopian near-future. But, when I heard Rick say that, it was real. There’s no room for pretense when … Read more

David Jeremiah, Charismatics, Rabbi, Anoint Donald Trump

An odd mishmash of religious folk gathered together in a steaming pile of ecumenical syncretism to anoint Donald Trump in prayer and blessings – a guy who doesn’t know if he “has ever asked God for forgiveness.” This is a real #facepalm moment for American evangelicalism. David Jeremiah – Southern Baptist Robert Jeffress – Southern … Read more

What is “Law” in America? A Response to “Turretin Fan”

I’m more annoyed at myself than anyone else, really. There’s no decent reason to be giving an anonymous-pseudonymous social media account the time of day, let alone using a few minutes of my hunting-day to provide a defense to the incessant goading and belligerence by one known as “Turretin Fan.” Most anonymous-pseudonymous social media accounts are … Read more

Blake Reynolds, Clayton Jennings, and Capturing Weak Women

Out there in evangelical-land there’s a group of young men gaining traction and attention – from TBN, book publishers, revival promoters, and a whole lot of females. The whole thing is giving me the heebie jeebies. A few pulpiteers in the Bunker have posted occasional Facebook videos from these fellas, and not only are they … Read more

These Are Not the Lord’s Cheeeps

Señor Ramon: There is no flavor. There are no spices. Where are the chips? Nacho: Somebody stole them. Señor Ramon: Did you not tell them that they were the Lord’s chips? Nacho: I was trying to! Doritos is now partnering with the LGBT campaign, It Gets Better, to produce rainbow-colored Doritos in support of the … Read more

Evangelical Leadership Culture and The Jethro Principle: Lamenting Moses Model Church Leadership and Christian Consumerism

Overlaying the Jethro Principle For those who believe in the inerrancy of scripture, the essential questions of Christian theology were settled long ago by the church fathers and their answers reiterated by the reformers. Except for the finer points of eschatology and soteriology, evangelical theologians have all but settled upon a systematic theology of Christianity. … Read more

War Room: A Review by Justin Peters

If you do not know the Kendrick brothers by name, you almost certainly know them by their films: Flywheel (2003),Facing the Giants (2006), Fireproof (2008), and Courageous (2011). Stephen, Alex, and Shannon Kendrick have just released their fifth faith-based film, War Room. War Room, starring popular Bible teachers Priscilla Shirer and Beth Moore, looks like it may well be the most successful of their films to date bringing in $11 million just on its opening weekend; more than triple it’s $3 million production budget.

Given the popularity of Christian themed films and the considerable buzz about this one in particular, my wife, Kathy, and I went to see War Room on the evening of September 3rd so that I could write a review. For those of you who read my review of Mark Burnett and Roma Downey’s movie, Son of God, you know that I am a bit skeptical of the Christian movie genre as a whole. Nonetheless, I do want to offer what I hope to be a fair review. This review will not touch on every single facet of the movie or even on every theme it presents, but I do hope to address what I believe to be the most important of them.

Southern Baptists Bail on Kentucky Clerk, Kim Davis

A fish rots from the head, down – The ancient Turkish people, as quoted in James Porter’s Observation on the Religion, Law, Government and Manners of the Turks, 1768. A great number of Christians are supporting Kim Davis for obeying her conscience and honoring her oath of office by upholding the laws of the commonwealth of Kentucky. Both Southern Baptist … Read more

Is Holiness a Thing? Slumming Culture with Karen Swallow Prior

But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving…Therefore do not become partners with them; for at one time you were darkness, … Read more

Are the Proletariat Revolting Against the Cooperative Program?

If you’re not a Southern Baptist, you probably don’t care. If that’s the case, read something else at Pulpit and Pen that may interest you. But if you are a Southern Baptist, you may just care that there appears to be some common sense thinking going on out there in SBC-land, and common sense thinking … Read more
