Cory Booker: Not Supporting Taxpayer-funded Abortions “assaults” African-American Women

Reagan Hall

While many African-American pro-lifers have spoken out on the eugenic nature of abortion, Cory Booker, a presidential hopeful, argued that opposing tax-payer funded abortions is to attack African-American women.

In a speech given to the Democratic National Committee African-American Leadership Summit in Atlanta, Booker slammed the Hyde Amendment saying:

This assault on women’s reproductive rights is an assault on women, but it’s particularly assault on African American women, and the Hyde Amendment to deny people through Medicaid and Medicare abortion rights, that is an assault on African American women, too.

Booker shared a video on twitter defending his proposal.

He asked me if I was for the Hyde Amendment, which is for reproductive rights, restricting our ability to make investments in radical things like birth control and family planning,” Booker said. “Of course I would look to repeal the Hyde Amendment. But I would go a lot further than that. I would stop the assault on Roe v. Wade. I would want to see Roe v. Wade memorialized in constitutional law. I would want to fund Planned Parenthood. I would want to make sure that we have Supreme Court justices, Circuit Court justices, District Court justices, who will honor the precedent of Roe v. Wade, and make sure that we get back to being a society that trusts women to make their own health care decisions. It shouldn’t be made by a bunch of people in Washington.

The Hyde Amendment has been added to every appropriations bill since 1976, and bans federal taxpayer abortion funding.

Booker’s disregard for human life should come as no surprise. Booker supported the Women’s Health Protection Act, which makes certain  limitations concerning abortion services unlawful and prohibits their imposition or application by any government. Booker has also voted against helping abortion survivors, opposes safety restrictions on abortions and even supports partial-birth abortions.

Cory Booker’s outrageous claim that opposing taxpayer-funded abortions assaults African-American women could not be farther from the truth. According to the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute, African-American women make up 28% of all abortions, while only making up 12% of the overall population. Hispanic abortion rates are very similar but make up 25% of all abortions and make up 12% of the overall population.

U.S Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas recently wrote: “The use of abortion to achieve eugenic goals is not merely hypothetical, the foundations for legalizing abortion in America were laid during the early 20th-century birth control movement. That movement developed alongside the American eugenics movement. And significantly, Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger recognized the eugenic potential of her cause.”
