Wayne Grudem Pronounces Roman Catholic Saved

In a story Pulpit & Pen broke last week, Marco Rubio enlisted several prominent evangelicals to serve on Roman Catholic presidential candidate, Marco Rubio’s religious advisory board. These evangelicals are the well-known theologian Wayne Grudem, megachurch pastor at Saddleback, Rick Warren, and professor of history at Baylor University, Thomas Kidd. Grudem, Professor of Theology and Biblical … Read more

SBC Pastor Insists Devout Roman Catholic, Marco Rubio is Saved

Yesterday, Dave Miller of SBC Voices posted a video of former Mormon turned Catholic, Marco Rubio’s supposed testimony of faith, in which Miller presumes to be genuine. Miller had this to say regarding Rubio’s testimony, …I believe I’d get excited to hear any presidential candidate give as cogent a testimony of his or her faith … Read more

Evangelical Intelligentsia Fawn Over Catholic, Rubio

The Past It is becoming abundantly clear that the Evangelical Intelligentsia has chosen their candidate in the 2016 Republican primary election, and it’s not the evangelical. It’s not even a Christian. No, it’s former Mormon and current Catholic (and still-protesting Protestants don’t consider that an improvement), Marco Rubio. Russell Moore has led the support for Rubio, … Read more

The Cooperative Program and the Road to Serfdom by G. Seth Dunn, MAcc, CPA

PREFACE  I’m a Baptist of Baptists.  I wasn’t baby-dedicated at my church on the 8th day, but it was done within a few weeks.  I grew up in a Southern Baptist church in a family that faithfully gave.  As a carefree middle-class youth, I never knew how much was given but it made an impression … Read more

Ben Carson, the IRS, and an Implicit Rebuke of David Uth and First Baptist Orlando

“I think the decision to disinvite (Ben Carson from the SBC Pastors Conference) is sad and more importantly wrong.” David Uth “The point about the Carson controversy is not what individual evangelicals choose to do in the voting booth. It is that events like the Southern Baptist Pastors’ Conference need to be campaign-free zones. We’ve … Read more

David Uth trying to save face, defending Carson.

Some people just can’t let bygones be bygones. A few Days ago, Joni Hannigan of the Christian Examiner blog wrote a flimsy piece claiming that Calvinist bloggers bullied Willy Rice into disinviting Carson from the 2015 SBC Pastor’s Conference. It was tacky enough that she barely sourced anything in her article, and those she did … Read more

Calvinist Bogeymen – The Ongoing Dreyfus Affair of Evangelicalism

“It’s too easy to criticize a man when he’s out of favour, and to make him shoulder the blame for everybody else’s mistakes.” Leo Tolstoy, War and Peace In 1894, a French military officer of Jewish descent named Alfred Dreyfus was convicted of treason for communicating military secrets to Germany.  Unfortunately, for Dreyfus, he was innocent … Read more

SBC Establishment Angry at those Meddling Bloggers over Ben Carson Fiasco

With the decision last week by Willy Rice (president of the 2015 SBC Pastor’s Conference) to drop Dr. Ben Carson from the speakers list, there has been some backlash from the evangelical establishment. Even Perry Noble went through an exhausting rant of unbiblical reasons why he was disappointed over the decision (although he’s hardly the establishment). Willy … Read more

Willy Rice's Sob Story: Ben Carson Sacrificed for the Sake of Unity

If you’ve been following Southern Baptist news, you know about the uproar that was cast by the SBC inviting Seventh Day Adventist, Dr. Ben Carson, to speak at the 2015 Pastor’s Conference. Aside from the serious theological differences that sets Southern Baptists apart from Seventh Day Adventists, it was also widely seen as an endorsement of a political candidate. In the wake of this massive outcry, a follow-up opinion was written at SBC Voices blog by Dave Matthews, basically stating that he disagreed with decision to invite Carson, but since it’s already done, for the sake of avoiding bad press, we should just shut up about it, accept it, and have lunch together.

Discerners of the Discerning: Hypocrisy Cloaked in Piety

Last week Dave Miller, of SBC Voices, published an article entitled Peas in a Pod: The Self-Appointed Prophet/Discernment Enforcer Playbook which attempted to summarize the folly of charismaniacs and discerners in one fell swoop.  Sadly, the piece was rife with hypocrisy, mischaracterizations, and broad-brush shaming all in the name of “God’s love”.  In fact, I hate to have to … Read more

Program Transcript: Louisiana College Corruption, a Recap

The following is a transcript from the Pulpit & Pen Program earlier this week, regarding the corruption of David Hankins, Joe Aguillard, Argile Smith and Tommy French. I’m trying to steer clear of all the problems in the SBC. Again, I don’t know how much I want to give the play-by-play of the sinking of … Read more

Program Transcript – on the Mischaracterization of The Squirrel’s Post at SBC Voices

The following is a transcript of small portion of  Monday’s Pulpit & Pen Program, in which JD briefly discusses what he believes to be a mischaracterization of The Squirrel’s recent post by Dave Miller and, more concerning, the marginalization of legitimate concerns through soteriological reductionism.   “I talked about this article on the program Friday (or … Read more

Sin Detector, Part 1

The other day in the upper-right corner of my Facebook feed I noticed a brief activity notification by a friend whom I’ve known to be a solid believer in Jesus, a faithful husband and father, an abolitionist, and a street evangelist. Commenting on a page about one of his hobbies (say, mountain biking), he used … Read more
