The powerful gay lobbying organization, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), is demanding that 25% of television characters be gay by 2025. The organization has a reputation of getting exactly what they ask for from Hollywood.
If you didn’t know any better, you would assume from television that homosexuals are literally all around us all the time. In reality, those who have experimented with homosexuality are less than 5% of the population, and those who are currently practicing homosexuals are around 2.5%. But even the current television lineup seems to portray society as far more littered with queerness than it is in reality.
GLAAD argues that an online survey (which are famously inaccurate) indicates that 12% of the general population and 20% of young people identify as something other than heterosexual. This is nowhere close to the scientific polling data, but GLAAD has nonetheless issued a challenge that 20% of characters be homosexual in order to reflect America’s gay population in the next few years.
GLAAD issued this challenge in their publication, Where We Are On TV.
That publication also puts the percentage of gay characters on television at 8.8%, up from 6.5% the previous year. Nearly half of the gay characters on tv are of minority ethnicity, meaning that TV executives are “killing two birds with one stone” in their requisite token minority quotas.
While television is putting more homosexual characters in minor roles, few major roles exist for homosexual characters. The fact is, American society is tiring of the current parade of queerness (GLAAD reports that gay characters in movies actually went down last year). The typical American just doesn’t want to see a lead gay character and is tiring of the propaganda.
