shepherds for sale and the worst Christians

Seth Dunn

I’m 65 pages into Megan Basham’s controversial new book Shepherd’s for Sale and I can’t help but notice all the familiar names I’m seeing from the last decade of work we’ve done at Protestia, the DISNTR, and right here at Pulpit & Pen. The evangelical actors being exposed to the light of day by Basham’s book are among the worst of the worst individuals we’ve covered in our polemical writings. Nine of them have literally won or been nominated for our less-than-coveted “Worst Christian of the Year” designation (we can’t really call it an “award”):

JD Greear – Worst Christian of the Year, 2019; Nominee, 2020

Danny Akin – Nominee, 2018; Nominee, 2019

Tim Keller – Nominee, 2020

Russell Moore – Nominee, 2021; Nominee 2023

Rick Warren – Nominee 2022; Nominee 2023

James Merrit – Nominee, 2021

Kevin Ezell – Nominee, 2020

David French – Nominee 2022

Beth Moore – Nominee, 2018; Nominee, 2019; Worst Christian of the Year, 2021

Again, these are just the names which I have noticed in the first 65 pages. I’m certain other “Worst Christians” will rear their heads as I continue reading (I’m looking at you Andy Stanley). We’ve known these people were bad news for a long time. I’m thankful to see a book from a major publishing house highlighting their problematic influence.
