[Capstone Report] Pastor James Pittman of New Hope Community Church of Palatine, Illinois announced on YouTube his intention to leave the Southern Baptist Convention over the leadership of J.D. Greear on issues of LGBTQ rights.
Pittman originally from New Orleans, studied at Howard University (Biology) and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (M.Div.). You can learn more about Pittman and his church on the church’s website and the For Such A Time As This Facebook page.
Pittman explains he joined the SBC during the time when Southern Baptists boldly declared “This is what the Bible says” about marriage, homosexuality and similar issues.
Of course, that was a long time ago.
“That was in the mid-90s, and oh, how the mighty have fallen,” Pastor Pittman said.
Unfortunately, the new leadership of the Southern Baptist Convention isn’t so brave.
And Pittman examined some of the shocking and controversial statements made by J.D. Greear. Pittman expressed concern over the direction of the SBC on important theological issues during Greear’s tenure.
Pittman played video excerpts of Southern Baptist Convention president J.D. Greear apologizing to the gay community on behalf of Southern Baptists.
“He wants to stand up for the rights of LGBT people,” Pittman said. “It is a farce. It is evil.”
And so, Pittman will lead his church out of the Southern Baptist Convention.
“I will officially end our relationship of our church with the Southern Baptist Convention—a convention that can elect such a man—it’s not a convention that our local church wants to be affiliated with,” Pittman said.
This is another church joining the growing numbers leaving the SBC.
As we’ve pointed out consistently, the rise of liberal politics destroys the church.
Russell Moore, J.D. Greear and so many others of the new group are destroying the SBC. Will you and your church leave or make one last stand in Orlando?
