The West Side Christian Church in Springfield, Illinois, promoted their sermon series, “Stranger Things,” by posting a video re-creating the popular Netflix series which included putting the pastor in a dress. Imitating the popular character, Eleven, Pastor Eddie Lowan wore a dress while playing the character of the young ‘tween’ girl, as other staff members played similar childhood characters from the series.
Complete with clothing and wigs to resemble the four boy characters, the camera panned to Lowan, who was wearing a wig and dress. Ostensibly, the congregation would be regaled with the hip relevance of the church, using pop-culture to draw an audience apparently disinterested with the Bible. The video is below.
Aside from the general self-disrespect to the pastoral office, Lowan is also violating the general equity of Deuteronomy 22:5, “A woman shall not wear a man’s garment, nor shall a man put on a woman’s cloak, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord your God.”
Please find a church where the Bible is enough to keep the attention of the congregation.
