Michigan Democratic Governor came under fire today when she claimed that Abortion is “life-sustaining.”
During her appearance on David Axelrod’s podcast, after covering a wide range of topics, the conversation drifted to abortion during the COVID-19 pandemic. Asking her what she thought of states like Texas and Ohio choosing to suspend abortion and consider it an elective surgery that might be constrained and delayed, she stated:
We stopped elective surgeries here in Michigan. And some people have tried to say that that type of procedure is considered the same [as abortion] and that’s ridiculous.
You know, a woman’s healthcare, her whole future, her ability to decide if and when she starts a family is um…not an “election,” it is fundamental to her life, it is life-sustaining, and its something that government should not be getting in the middle of.
When asked whether she thought this was a backdoor tactic of promoting a pro-life agenda rather than a legitimate policy decision, she did not hold back.
My gut is it’s the former. You know, I’m not in Texas. I don’t know all the individuals involved, but I do think there is a very concerted effort to use every opportunity to take away a woman’s ability to make her own healthcare decisions.
This quote follows a string of controversies that Governor Whitmer has been involved in. A few days ago she appeared on the Today show with Craig Melvin and was asked about her policies like forbidding residents from visiting friends and relatives, or travelling to their second homes or vacation rentals inside the state.
Governor Whitmer made the case that cracking down and preventing travel to your own home or planting a garden wasn’t a big deal, because inclement weather was already curbing these behaviors anyway, clearly not appreciating what a gross overreach her dictates are.
Let me tell you this: Michigan has the third most COVID-19 cases in the nation right now. And, we’re not the third largest state in the nation. That tells you that we’ve got a unique crisis on our hands and it demands a unique solution. So, we just had snow. I’ve got snow on the ground here in Michigan. I’ve got snow on the ground in Lansing and we’re expecting up to 30 inches of snow in the Upper Peninsula. The fact that we’re cracking down on people traveling between homes or planting or landscaping or golfing, really, for a couple more weeks is not going to meaningfully impact people’s ability to do so, because the snow will do that itself.
As a result of her aggressive and intrusive measures, she has been greeted with a string of protests and rallies outside the capital who are disdainful of draconian implementations.
