The parents of a 17-year old girl announced on Facebook in a lengthy post that they got it wrong all those years ago when they declared their child to be a “girl”, and as a result threw her a belated gender-reveal party, announcing to friends and family that their daughter was in fact “a boy.”
We wanted to announce that we got it wrong 17 years ago when we told the world we were having a little girl, and named that child McKenzie. So, we’d like to introduce you to our SON: Grey. He’s much like any other 17 year old nerdy boy, stays up way to late gaming, hates showering, and eats too much junk food. We will be referring to Grey with he/him pronouns from here on out, but he told us to tell you that he also doesn’t mind if you use they/them.
Love Gwaltney, the mother, recounts how parents can get so excited about picking out baby names, clothes, and nursery decor based on the biological sex of their babies, even throwing gender-reveal parties with pink and blue color schemes. She says while most of the time that works out perfectly fine, parents can force a gender, based on biological sex, and easily get it wrong.
For this reason, when given the chance to take a mulligan and throw their daughter a new gender-reveal party after the fact, she relates:
The colors of the balloons we chose for Grey match the Non-binary pride flag, and the cake layers are those that represent Transgender bodies, for those that are wondering.
As an interesting twist to the story, the mother, Love, is also pregnant again and says that when it comes time to find out if the new baby is going to be a boy or girl, she won’t be making the same mistake twice.
