A 16-year-old student became sick after a school nurse implanted birth control into the girl without her mother’s knowledge or consent. The school is one of Baltimore’s School-Based Health Centers (SBHC), many offer birth control to students.
After seeing a pediatrician for headaches and soreness, the doctor found a tiny tube containing a contraception called Nexplanon, improperly placed in the girl’s upper arm by the school nurse. The doctor advised the mother and daughter to have the tube removed, not only because of the pain she was already experiencing but because the tube could cause worse health problems, like blood clots.
The student’s mother, Nicolle Lambert told WMAR-2:
“I actually started crying because just to hear that your child, anything could happen to your child and you don’t even know what’s going on. It’s a scary feeling.”
“I actually went to the school. I was furious. I was mad, so I went to the school and the nurse told me, ‘I don’t have to talk to you about absolutely nothing. I’m like that is my child, I take care of this child, you can talk to me about my child.”
Lambert was allegedly told to leave when she confronted the nurse, “And they put me out of the school.”
Lambert also points out the school must contact her to give her child Tylenol but inserted birth control without her permission.
During the removal of the tube, doctors had to remove damaged skin and tissue, PJ Media reports. The birth control was inserted without parental consent but could not be removed without Mrs. Lambert’s permission.
