Corporate Donations & Community Work: How to Get Your Business Involved

If you’re a business owner who’s looking to widen the social impact of your organisation, consider making some corporate donations or volunteering your team for community work. All you really need to do to organise these selfless endeavors is decide on what kind of support you and your team are happy to offer. Read on for a small list of ways you can give back as a business.

Support an ongoing programme

There are some differences between making corporate contributions and implementing a corporate contribution or workplace giving programme. Whilst the former can often be singular donations, the latter is a sustained commitment to a charitable project. If you’re looking to implement a corporate contribution programme, talk to your staff about what kind of organisation or project they’d like to support on a long-term basis, and how they’d like to provide their contributions. The most popular methods involve giving staff the option to donate a small amount of their salary with each paycheck. Even just a dollar or two every week can really add up!

Plan a company fundraiser

Fundraisers can be a great way of breaking up the monotony of your business calendar and opening your workplace up to the family and friends of your staff. There’s a myriad of options for you when it comes to organising fundraising events too, so it’s worth scheduling a meeting with your staff to gauge their preferences. A fun trivia night may be a crowd favourite, or perhaps you’d prefer a silent auction where people are free to get creative and auction up whatever they like. You may even want to theme your fundraiser to complement the nature of your business and then open the event up to your wider community as a means of generating some local publicity. For instance, companies working in the sports or lifestyle industries may throw a 5K or book out a bowling alley for a night of action and excitement! Or a finance company could throw a casino night! Don’t be afraid to experiment by hosting multiple events within the year. You may even find some new annual traditions here!

Encourage local volunteering

Encouraging your staff to volunteer at local organisations can be a fantastic way to get back far more than just a tax deduction from your charitable giving. When your staff volunteer on behalf of your business, they’re not only positively representing your organisation, but are also establishing a tone of giving and togetherness in your local community. Volunteering may also aid in positioning your organisation as an invaluable fixture of your community, a footing which can greatly benefit any budding small business.

Reverse advent calendars

With Christmas right around the corner, the novel idea of reverse advent calendars has been making a sweeping comeback. The basic premise is this: instead of giving yourselves a small gift every day, you give a small gift back. Reverse advent calendars are a perfect way for organisations to make collective contributions. All you need to do is assign each coworker a specific day on your company advent calendar. At the end of 25 days, you’ll have a hamper filled with foods, clothing, and other goodies ready to be donated to your local food bank, homeless shelter, or any other organisation that catches the eye of your team.

As you can see, your options when it comes to organisational giving are actually quite extensive, so be sure to make your final decision with much collaboration and communication!
