A Republican-sponsored provision passed in 2017 that would tax – of all things – parking spaces at churches was repealed by President Trump last week.
The Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2020 was signed by President Trump in yet another move demonstrating that he is a friend of people of faith.
Hidden away in the 2017 law was a whopping 21% tax on charities and churches for parking spaces. Thankfully the law will act retroactively, and churches that had to pay the obscene tax will be due a refund.
Religious organizations have been strongly opposing the tax since March, when dozens of religious leaders appealed to the president via letter.
The religious leaders who signed on to that letter included Leith Anderson, president of the National Association of Evangelicals; Russell Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission; Shirley V. Hoogstra, president of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities; William C. Daroff, senior vice president for public policy of the Jewish Federations of America; Nathan Diament, executive director for public policy of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America; and Daniel R. Jackson, president of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, North American Division.
This may be the only tax that Russell Moore and Leith Anderson (of the famously liberal National Association of Evangelicals) are ever on record of having been against, as both leaders generally advocate routinely for larger government.
