Yesterday on the Polemics Report podcast, I mentioned the concept of the Overton Window. The Overton Window is the range of ideas tolerated in public discourse, also known as the window of discourse. It refers to a belief that an idea will be adopted only if it’s within the “realm of possible.”
So, if the Intelligentsia wants the public to adopt a particular idea that lies outside the Overton window, what is to be done? Shift the window. Since commonly held ideas, attitudes and presumptions frame what is politically possible and create the “window,” a change in the opinions held by people will shift it. Move the window of what is possible and those beliefs that were once “off the table” are now “all the rage.”
In the context of yesterday’s podcast, I was discussing how events like Revoice and extremely proud LGBTQ “Christians” like Nate Collins and Preston Sprinkle aren’t intending on commandeering evangelicalism. My belief, to the contrary, is that something like Revoice only serves to move the Overton Window to the left. This allows leftists like Rosaria Butterfield to appear like centrists (but only in comparison), thus putting her previously unorthodox views suddenly “in the middle.”
This is a good example. Michael Moore, once considered an alt-left extremist, now presents himself as “the mainstream” of the Democratic Party. The same Overton Window shift is happening in evangelicalism.
