The New Evangelical False Gospel of Unity
There tends to be a great amount of resentment towards discerning believers who are quick to rebuke other Christians who are in sin or even false believers who are masquerading as Christians. The argument is that it distracts from the love of Jesus and unity among the brethren.
Titus 3:10-11 is possibly one of the most twisted passages of Scripture used against discerning believers.
As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.
Unity has become the gospel in modern Christendom. Ecumenism is the new rage. Everyone is into it.
So then why kill the buzz? Isn’t it good that everyone is getting along?
Jesus came not to bring peace, but a sword (Matthew 10:34). He did not come to tell everyone that they could believe what they want to believe, worship whatever idols they want to worship, and seek whatever God they want to seek.
First and foremost, God hates idolaters. So much so, that His first two commandments are devoted to this eternal truth (Exodus 20:1-6).
He doesn’t even want to hear from or be consulted by idolaters (Ezekiel 14:3).
Idolatry is equated with a rejection of God’s word and seen as a rebellion against Him (1 Samuel 15:23). We are commanded to take no part in idolatry or the unfruitful works thereof (Ephesians 5:11).
We must flee from idolatry (1 Corinthians 10:14, 1 John 5:21). Believers can therefore in no way be united with idolaters.
Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? What agreement has the temple of God with idols? – 1 Corinthians 6:14-16a (ESV)
The Bible is very clear that spiritual enterprise between believers and unbelievers is no different than practicing the idolatry itself.
No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons. – 1 Corinthians 10:20
Many of these Pagans masquerade as true believers; they speak Christian language and affirming certain Christian orthodoxies (2 Corinthians 11:13). Many charismatics such as the New Apostolic Reformation, Roman Catholics, and religious cults fall into this category. On the surface, they look like Christians. They hold to some Christian morals and values. They have a form of godliness, but deny its power (2 Timothy 3:5). When you truly examine their beliefs, you see that they have abandoned the truth and hold to damning doctrines of demons (1 Timothy 4:1).
These are the ones that cause divisions. And it’s these who Titus 3:10-11 is referring to–those who hold to false doctrines.
I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. – Romans 16:17
It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit. – Jude 19
These people are false converts; they do not know God or have His Spirit. Whatever appearance of holiness they have is only a facade–it is not of God (Romans 10:3-12).
God does not save through a false Jesus or a false Gospel.
To be co-belligerents with those who deny the true saving Gospel of Jesus Christ for the advancement of the purposes of God is to deny the power of God himself. It is to partake in the wickedness and idolatry of those who reject Him. It is to elevate your own purpose above His. Just as the people on earth tried to build the “tower to Heaven” (Genesis 11:1-9), God, in His infinite wisdom, knew their intentions and knew that their purposes would ultimately lead people away from God–so He destroyed it. God knows that partnering with those who are lost will serve only to compromise the Gospel and lead people away from Him.
But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. – 2 Peter 2:1-2
Believers must be united around one thing only–the truth of Jesus Christ. Any other unity is superficial and forbidden by God. We must be of the same mind and judgment–and that is only found in the Word of God (1 Corinthians 1:10).
